Established in 1971, the Ecole Hôtelière Sir Gaëtan Duval is recognised in Mauritius and the Indian Ocean area for its excellence in training in the Tourism and Hospitality Industry.
The school was founded in 1971 as a joint project of the UNDP, the ILO and the French Government. The objective was to train employees of the hotel industry, which was then at its embryonic stage.
The school started in a small house in Quatre-Bornes and then, moved to the former Mascareignes Hotel in Curepipe.
Students, after their training, were awarded a certificate in Food Production, Food and Beverage Service, Front Office or Housekeeping.
In 1990, an agreement for the provision of technical training was signed between the IVTB and the French Ministry of Education.
In 1991, the IVTB and the Caisse Francaise de Developpement signed an agreement to fund for a new school at Ebène with a view to serve the growing needs of the Hospitality and Tourism (H/T) industry on both a national and regional basis.
In 1997, a tourism department was created and courses in tour guiding and guest relations were launched at NTC level2. This was followed by courses at diploma level in Hotel Management and Tourism Management.
In 1999, the Apprenticeship Scheme was launched. The NTC Level 3 Courses are being delivered through this mode to meet the increasing demand for trained staff.
Three new antennas have been inaugurated at Pointe Jerome, Surinam and Bon Accueil to meet the requirements for new Hotels and IRS projects where Apprenticeship Programmes are currently being run.
There is a vast array of award courses being dispensed on full time, part time and apprenticeship modes. The Hotel School even offers customised training programmes to suit the needs of private organisations and individuals on request.
Affiliations and recognition from various foreign and local institutions offer possibility of further studies to our students.
Quality of training delivered at the Hotel School is constantly being monitored, course curricula is regularly reviewed, competencies of our trainers upgraded and ISO 9001-2000 procedures are strictly adhered to so as to ensure a better learning environment.
